3.2.2 Carbon footprint
CO2-Emissions (in g of Figure 9. Carbon intensity of eating: 100g CO2e (CO2-raportti 2017) - (Galileo.it)
CO2 per kg of food)
Carbon footprint is used as a carbon dioxide
unit, carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-eq.).
It tells the impact of greenhouse gases on
global warming as equivalent to carbon
dioxide emissions. (WWF 2012, 2.)
Carbon footprint refers to the representing number of greenhouse gases
produced during the life cycle of the product, expressed as mass of total
carbon dioxide in kilograms or tones (Harmaala & Jallinoja 2012, 135). The
carbon dioxide emissions (carbon footprint) caused by our personal behavior
are driven to a large extent by the type and quality of the food we consume.
An environmental friendly food:
The carbon footprint will be smaller when people eat the upstream products Contains very little (or not at all) meat;
such as vegetables, fruits, cereals and berries. According to Allekotte (2014, Is organic or/and local;
14-16), livestock generate around 18% of all greenhouse gases globally. Is seasonal;
She notes that according to statistics, greenhouse gas emissions from meat Is regionally produced.
production are smallest in pig meat and poultry meat production as can be
seen in figure 9. It’s still good to remember that greenhouse gases caused by the production
of food differ very much from one food type to the other.
